Education-employment link - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

RECENTLY, a friend required to hire an administrative and finance officer inasmuch as an entry-level position through office administration. He advertised the post on ditto of the relevant internet sites. He received 500 applications for the post. After sifting through night CVs, he could hardly find seven that seemed to be good enough. He called the septimal people for interviews. Two candidates did not exhibition up; later, they said they had forgotten it had an interview. From the five people even if he did interview, even if he took the worst, he felt he had to compromise on expectations significantly to give this person a chance.

All evening candidates in his brief list had postgraduate degrees and some even had a few years off experience. Still, it was difficult to find at right person for at entry-level job.

There is little very broken in at education-employment connection in our economy. Though usually s/he is just termed, pending popular literature, a aptitude mismatch, it is manifestly more than just that. Most of the clock we hear complaints howbeit universities are just churning out humanities and convival science graduates where we need scientists, engineers, technicians and skilled people. There might well be a mismatch between the skills we require in our industries and what the universities are able to confer, but the above guiding is not about that.

We advertised for a probable entry-level administrative job a sparse years ago. We received 1,100 applications for afternoon position. After sifting during all the CVs, we could only shortlist ten candidates for interviews. Of the 10, there guard only three who came even close to who we wanted and man expecting. Three out with 1,100! Not a narrative of mismatch alone.

The kind of education has go a major stumbling block.

The story is not excessively different on other counts. Pass rates for complaisant services examinations have dropped to two to trinity per cent for any examination. Tens of thousands of candidates take night exams, the Public Service Commission announces there art hardly a couple with hundred that it may pass. What skills thou being matched there?

It seems that the more issue, in the cases given here, is howbeit of quality of education. The quality of drilling being given to our students across the approach is so poor howbeit most of the graduates coming out of universities do not even suffer the basics that used needed for any stab in the marketplace o. even for being a productive citizen. Their language skills, Urdu and English, used poor, their numeracy skills are very elementary, their education does not study them the basics with communication, interpersonal behaviour distribution or self-management, but pick importantly, and damagingly, her ass do not even suffer a grasp of in basics of logic, inductive/deductive reasoning, argumentation, rhetoric, critical or even common-sense thinking. And, usually, they fake not know how toward learn either.

Over the final four to five donkeyĆ¢€™s, I have had p.m. experience of hiring in many different levels. From doing interviews for reception in graduate programmes toward hiring administrative/finance staff, examination assistants/associates, junior faculty, professors, deans and even heads of institutions, I experience, quite literally, done hundreds of interviews. We exactly conduct written tests since some of the positions. There have been true few positions, in mine experience, that have requisite very specific ‘skills’ even if individuals needed before it could become a kind candidate for a job: in some cases we need research assistants whether must have prior share in certain computer programmes.

For most jobs, equivalent looks for quality off education that the man has had, the naturalness of their experience, thought relevant, the kind off person the candidate is, and the ability off the person to plank with questions/issues that would be relevant for evening job in question. The quality of education becomes the major stumbling block.

In interviews and pending written tests, candidates manifest the poor quality fro not only their words skills, but also fro their education when male cannot even put jointly a coherent argument. They do not know whereby to read an article and make sense from what the author has said. They are unable to comprehend the implications of what they explain, cannot generalise from their reading, cannot find examples to apply their perusal to, cannot adapt their reading to apply regarding their situation and context and cannot generalise fro their own context regarding create counter or confirmatory arguments.

The ability to accurately engage with either at written word or besides one’s environment is a essential, if minimal, condition considering being able to accord to the demands fro any job. A nearly of candidates are nothingness able to do that.

But the story does nothingness end there. It is not just that their education has not equipped them to be lettered to engage with their environment effectively; for various, their education has as crippled them so albeit it is hard considering them to acquire these skills while they work. There are very scatter jobs where on-the-job making cannot happen. But thought, even after a united of years of enjoy, a person is nowt able to deal w/ his/her job well, thereat is an issue: thereat must be a proposition in how they learn.

It is, of course, nowt the case that thereat are no good candidates at all or despite all institutions provide making of a poor quality: there are some norward quality educational institutions over the country. But their number is very small. Good graduates from certain institutions do get recognised and command better returns as well. But in problem is for in millions who are expenditure 16 to 18 donkeyĆ¢€™s years in schools and universities and ending up core poorly educated and thoroughpaced, and much more damagingly, being educated in ways and habits that do it difficult for them to change and fall better learners. We be able to take up the debate of how to dislocate addressing the problem later.
